RubbishQuotes Glossary

Note: Even though trash or rubbish is mentioned here as the material handled, recyclables such as cardboard and paper can also be handled equally well.

Clean Outs: "Clean Outs" refer to a one time removal and disposal of the contents of a domestic or commercial property. Since a "clean out" can vary from the removal of a single item to the removal of all the contents of an extensive space, it is difficult for the hauler to quote prices without knowing what has to be cleaned out first.

Containers: There are four basic types of containers ranging in size to meet the generators needs:

  • Small Containers
Small containers range in size from 2 to 10 cubic yards and generally are used for regular weekly pick-ups. Small containers stay at the generation site and can be positioned anywhere that a truck can backup to them. The only exception to this is the small container such as a 2 cubic yard container that is on wheels and is wheeled out to the truck, if need be. There are two types of small containers: front end load (FEL) and rear load (RL).
    • Front-end load containers derive their name from the fact that the truck that picks them up approaches the container from the front and picks it up from the front of the truck.
    • Rear load containers derive their name from the fact that the truck that picks them up approaches the container by backing up to it and picks it up from the back of the truck.
Both front end and rear end containers are filled with equal ease and, aside from certain cases, can be used interchangeably. Prices quoted are monthly prices including the container rental charge, the pickup charge and the disposal charge.
  • Open Roll Off Containers
Open roll off containers range in size from 10 cubic yard to 40 cubic yard but the most common is a 30 cubic yard open roll off (22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 5 feet high). They get their name because they roll on and off of the service truck. These containers are loaded from the top or in the back door. The container can be delivered virtually anywhere you can drive a large truck and are taken away completely for disposal. Prices quoted here are either one total lump sum price with a weight limit and overage rates or a breakdown of pickup, rental and disposal for specific driving distances.
  • Stationary Compactors (with Closed Roll Off Containers)
Closed roll off containers are closed on the top and the rubbish or trash and/or recyclables are loaded in through the end via a compactor. The compactor in this case is stationary while the container attached to it that receives the trash is taken away for disposal when full. These containers and stationary compactors are for high trash generation accounts. Prices quoted are for rental of the unit, the pickup charge and the disposal charge on a per ton basis.
  • Self-Contained Compactors
A self-contained compactor is a hydraulic compactor permanently attached to the roll off container and the whole unit is taken away when full and emptied and returned. These containers are for high trash generation accounts and they have the added feature of containing free liquids. Prices quoted are for rental plus the pickup charge plus the disposal charge on a per ton basis.

Commercial Hand Stop: Commercial Hand Stop refers to pick-up of commercial trash. Pricing is affected by frequency of pick-up, location of pick-up, location of rubbish at the commercial stop and type of material to be picked up. It is difficult for haulers to quote prices for commercial pick-ups in advance of knowing the particulars of a hand stop.

C.Y. (Cubic Yards): Cubic yards or c.y. Is the standard term used in calculating the volume of rubbish containers. There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.

Residential Pick-Up: Residential Pick-Up refers to weekly pick-up of home rubbish. This service applies to those who live in communities where this service is not supplied by the town.

Stationary Compactor: Stationary compactors are permanently anchored to a concrete slab at the site of generation and compact the trash into a closed roll off container that is unhooked from the stationary compactor when full and taken away for emptying. These stationary compactors are for high trash generation accounts. Prices quoted are for rental of the stationary compactor and box plus a pickup charge plus a disposal charge on a per ton basis.

Self-Contained Compactor: A self-contained compactor is a hydraulic compactor permanently attached to the roll off container and the whole unit is taken away when full and emptied and returned. These containers are for high trash generation accounts and they have the added feature of containing free liquids. Prices quoted are for rental plus the pickup charge plus the disposal charge on a per ton basis.
